Junior Dairy Manager

JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Overview:

The Junior Dairy Manager supports the day-to-day operations of the dairy farm, ensuring efficient and effective management of assigned departments. This role serves as a bridge between farm employees and senior management, focusing on optimizing processes, maintaining animal health and welfare, and achieving production goals.

 

The Junior Dairy Manager is a hands-on leader who uses their comprehensive knowledge of dairy operations gained through the Dairy Management Trainee Program to contribute to the farm’s overall success.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Operational Management

  • Oversee daily activities in assigned departments, such as Milking, Breeding, Feeding, Maternity, Hospital, Rolling, Heifer Ranch and Shop.
  • Ensure compliance with farm protocols, industry standards, and safety regulations. Participate in SOP reviews and management.
  • Monitor herd health, production metrics, and operational efficiency, identifying and addressing issues promptly.
  • Collaborate with staff to implement process improvements and innovations.

 

Team Leadership

  • Supervise and mentor farm employees, provide clear instructions and foster a positive work environment.
  • Assist with employee training and ensure adherence to standard operating procedures.
  • Monitor staff performance and provide feedback to senior management.

 

Animal Health and Welfare

  • Work closely with veterinarians and senior management to ensure the health and well-being of livestock.
  • Participate in key activities, such as calving, breeding, and disease prevention.
  • Maintain accurate records of herd health, production, and treatments.

 

Resource Management

  • Ensure proper use and maintenance of farm equipment and machinery.
  • Monitor inventory levels of feed, medications, and supplies; coordinate replenishment as needed.
  • Assist in implementing sustainable practices to reduce waste and optimize resources.

 

Administrative Duties

  • Analyze production data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Assist with budgeting, payroll, and financial reporting tasks as directed by senior management.
  • Prepare reports on departmental performance for review by senior leadership.

 

Problem Solving and Decision-Making

  • Troubleshoot operational challenges and implement solutions in collaboration with other managers.
  • Act as the point of contact for immediate issues when senior management is unavailable.

 

Qualifications:

  • Completion of the Dairy Management Trainee Program or equivalent experience.
  • Strong knowledge of dairy operations, including milking, breeding, feeding, and equipment maintenance.
  • Leadership experience or demonstrated ability to manage and motivate teams.
  • Familiarity with dairy software systems for herd management and production tracking.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and using metrics to drive decisions.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.

 

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with large herd management.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting and maintaining farm equipment.
  • Knowledge of agricultural safety standards and best practices.
